A three-game win streak has gotten UNLV (14-10) back into the conference race after a 2-5 start to the MWC schedule. However, for a realistic chance to finish in the top half, the Lady Rebels will have to do something they have yet to do this year, win a conference road game. They get two chances this week, as UNLV meets Air Force on Thursday night at 6 pm (PST) in Colorado Springs, Colo., before taking on first-place New Mexico in a game broadcast by CSTV on Saturday in the Pit.
In UNLV's favor is that the Lady Rebels have already beaten both teams this year in Las Vegas, and hope to complete a season sweep of both on this road trip. Currently, UNLV is tied for fourth in the MWC along with Colorado State at 5-5, and are half a game ahead of Wyoming. The Lady Rebels trail BYU (7-4 MWC record), but the Cougars will play their final three games all on the road, including at Utah and at UNLV.
One factor in UNLV's current win streak is its dominance on the boards. In the past three games, UNLV has outrebounded its opponents by 57 combined rebounds (a 19.0 rebound margin). In the 71-58 win over Colorado State on Thursday night, UNLV held a 20-5 edge on the offensive boards, which led to a 24-7 advantage on second chance points.
Junior guard Sheena Moore became the 14th Lady Rebel to score 1,000 points at UNLV in the game at Utah, and senior forward RanDee Henry is on pace to become the 15th, as she is 43 points away with at least five games left to play this season.
