COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Sheena Moore and RanDee Henry were both named to the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball All-Second Team, while Sequoia Holmes was an Honorable Mention selection, it was announced Monday by the conference. It marks the second straight appearance for both Moore and Henry on the all-conference team.
Moore, a 5-7 junior guard from Lansing, Mich., was also a second-team selection in 2003-04. Having moved to the point guard this season, she still lead the team in scoring at 14.8 ppg, fourth in the conference, and finished fifth in assists (3.86 apg), 14th in steals (1.50 spg), third in free throw percentage (82.1%), and was 12th in three-point percentage (33.8%). She also led the conference with 27 three-pointers in MWC play.
Henry, a 6-1 senior forward from Detroit, Mich., was second in the conference with 8.5 rebounds per game and also finished seventh in scoring at 14.2 ppg. Her 10 double-doubles also tied for her second in the MWC, and she was named MWC Player of the Week twice. Henry was a first-team selection last season.
Holmes, a 6-1 freshman forward from Las Vegas, moved into the starting lineup after the second game of the year and became one of the more versatile players on the team. She is 22nd in the conference in scoring at 9.3 ppg and 17th in rebounding at 4.6 rpg. She leads the Lady Rebels in steals at 1.82 per game (seventh in the MWC), blocks with 0.79 per game (eighth in the MWC), and in field goal percentage at 48.9% (sixth in the MWC).
Utah's Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn were both named MWC Co-Players of the Year, with it being the third straight Player of the Year award for Smith. She led the league in rebounding (8.9 rpg) and was second in scoring (18.6) in conference play, while Thorburn finished first in scoring (19.4 ppg) assists (6.43 apg) and steals (2.79 spg). Utah's Lana Sitterud was named Defensive Player of the Year, while New Mexico freshman Dionne Marsh was the Newcomer of the Year. New Mexico's Don Flanagan was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Lobos to their second straight regular season co-championship.
The All-MWC first team was made up of Smith, Thorburn, Julie Sullivan of BYU, Lindsey Arndt of New Mexico, and Ashley Elliott of Wyoming. On the second team, along with Moore and Henry, was Mandi Moore (New Mexico), Melissa Dennett (Colorado State), and Hanna Zavecz (Wyoming). The third team consisted of Danielle Chessman and Kristen Kozlowski from BYU, Lindsay Thomas from Colorado State, Sitterud, and Marsh.
The Lady Rebels finished the regular season at 15-13, and finished tied for fifth with a 6-8 record in league play. UNLV, the fifth seed in the 2005 MWC Tournament, will open against fourth-seed Wyoming in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 2:30 pm (MST) at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
