SALINAS, Calif. - UNLV women's golf finished in a tie for fourth place and junior Elena Kurokawa took home second-place honors Wednesday at the Spartan Invitational.
All five Rebels finished in the top 40 as UNLV posted its lowest team score of the spring.
The Rebels shot a final-round 298 as a team on the par-71, 5,826-yard course at the Corral de Tierra Country Club to finish in fourth along with California with a team total of 884.
Kurokawa displayed why she was named the Mountain West Conference golfer of the month Tuesday, firing an even-par 71 on Wednesday to finish the tournament in second place with a three round total of 211 (-2). Her opening round 67 (-4) tied for the second-lowest round of the tournament and Kurokawa was one of two players to finish the invitational below par. This was the second consecutive tournament that Kurokawa has finished in the top 10 after placing eighth at the Wildcat Invitational.
Sofie Andersson of California claimed medalist honors with a 206 (-7) as she carded round of 68-67-71, the only player in the field to post par scores all three rounds. UCLA defended its team title it won last year with an 868, two strokes ahead of Washington's 870. UC Irvine finished third with an 878, followed by UNLV and Cal.
Hwanhee Lee joined Kurokawa in the top 20, finishing in a tie for 18th with a total of 223 (+10) as she shot a final round 73 to go along with two 75s on Tuesday. Seema Sadekar finished 23rd with a three-round total of 224 (75-71-78 +11), followed by Young Pak in 34th (75-75-78-228) and Christine Hentzner in 40th (78-75-76-229).
The Rebels return to the links next week for the UNLV Spring Invitational at Black Mountain Country Club. The three-day, 54-hole event gets underway on March 14 and concludes on March 16.
