STANFORD, Calif. - The nation's second-ranked UNLV men's golf team showed that being awarded the NCAA West Regional's top seed was no fluke as it won the tournament on Saturday by three shots at Stanford Golf Course (par 70, 6,742 yards). By placing in the top 10, the Rebels have advanced to the NCAA Championships.
On Saturday, UNLV (281-277-288--846, +6) shot a final-round 8-over-par 288 and held on to the lead, winning the event by three shots at 6-over 846. New Mexico (284-284-281--849, +9), which finished second, fired a final-round 1-over 281 to finish at 9-over 849.
Washington (286-282-286--854, +14) finished third, while UCLA (288-288-281--857; +17) and Arizona State (290-281-286--857, +17) tied for fourth to round out the top five.
Individually, Stanford's Rob Grube (69-70-65--204, -6) captured medalist honors after shooting a final-round 5-under 65 to finish at 6-under for the tournament, three shots ahead of UCLA's Kevin Chappell (71-67-69--207, -3) and Arizona's Nathan Lashley (66-72-69--207, -3), who both tied for second.
Ryan Moore (69-69-72--210, +2) led UNLV individually and finished tied for sixth at even par after shooting a 2-over 72 on Saturday.
Other Rebel players were: Ryan Keeney (71-68-74--213, +3; T15th), Andres Gonzales (70-69-74--213, +3; T15th), Travis Whisman (71-71-72--214, +4; T21st) and Jarred Texter (73-74-70--217, +7; T39th).
UNLV's win is the first for the Rebels at the NCAA West Regional since 1997 and is their fourth overall in 17 consecutive appearances. It was the third win of this season for the Rebels as a team.
Also, this year UNLV has qualified for the NCAA finals for the first time since 2003. Last season's team failed to qualify, but that was something of an aberration as UNLV has now made the NCAA Championships 15 times in the last 17 years. The Rebels had advanced to the finals 12 straight times before missing out in 2001.
The 2005 NCAA Championships will be played June 1-4 in Owings Mills, Md.
