LAS VEGAS - RanDee Henry and Sheena Moore both received top honors at the 2005 UNLV Basketball Postseason Banquet held Wednesday night. The Lady Rebels were honored for their outstanding season, in which they advanced to the postseason for the fifth straight year with a trip to the WNIT.
Moore, a junior guard, and Henry, a senior forward, were named co-Best Offensive Players of the Year as they were in the top two on the team in scoring the entire season. Moore, named second-team All-MWC for the second straight year, finished fourth in the conference with 14.6 ppg and was sixth in assists with 3.65 apg. She became the 14th player to score 1,000 career points at UNLV, and earned All-Tournament honors four times in 2004-05.
Henry, also a second-team All-MWC selection after earning first-team honors in 2003-04, finished seventh in the league in scoring (14.1 ppg), was second in rebounding (8.5 rpg), and also added 11 double-doubles, second best in the conference. She also became the 15th Lady Rebel to score 1,000 career points at UNLV.
Freshman forward and Las Vegas native Sequoia Holmes received the Rookie Award, after breaking into the starting lineup in her third game and turning in one of the best seasons in the conference by a newcomer. She finished fourth on the team in scoring (9.2 ppg), second in rebounding (5.0 rpg), and led the team in both steals (52) and blocks (25). Junior Nejlah Clark was named Best Defensive Player, while fellow classmate Nikki Hitchens received the Versatility Award.
Several other Lady Rebels were also honored during the night. Holmes was named the winner of the Constance Jinks "Spark Plug" award for the spark she brought to the team when on the court. Senior center Amy Loftus received the Best Student-Athlete award for the second straight year, while sophomore Kisha Lee received the Best Mile-Time Award. Junior guard Brittney Thomas was bestowed with the Lady Rebel Award. Thomas scored just 18 points in the first 12 games, but averaged 8.6 ppg over the final 19 and moved into a starting role midway through the conference season.
Two awards were also handed out to members of the media. Bob Blum, the "Voice of the Lady Rebels", who has handled radio play-by-play action for UNLV for the past 18 years, was given the Service Award, while Las Vegas Sun columnist Ron Kantowski, who also served as beat writer for the Lady Rebels during the 2003-04 season, received the Appreciation Award.
