LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The No. 26 ranked UNLV women's golf team struggled in the second round of the NCAA West Regional, firing a 312 (+24) at the New Mexico State University Golf Course to drop from sixth place to 12th with 18 holes remaining.
Young Pak and Seema Sadekar both fired strong rounds for the Rebels as Pak shot a 76 (+4) and is in a tie for 12th and Sadekar carded a one-over 73 to move into a tie for 16th after starting the day in 45th. But those were the only two solid rounds of the day for the UNLV team, which has a two-day total of 613 (301-312, +37)..
No. 16 Southern California moved to the top of the leaderboard by shooting a 302 Friday for a two-round score of 595 (+15) and the Trojans have a six-stroke lead over No. 9 Tennessee which has a score of 601 (291-310, +25). No. 5 Georgia is in third place (296-306-602, +26) and No. 25 Cal, No. 2 UCLA and BYU are tied for fourth with a two-round score of 603 (+27).
Sadekar made one of the biggest moves up the leaderboard by rolling in four birdies in her round and at one point the sophomore was three-under par. Pak also played steady golf with two birdies and four bogeys, but a double-bogey on the 16th hole hurt her round.
Elena Kurokawa shot an 83 (+11), Hwanhee Lee carded an 81 (+9) and Christine Hentzner had a second-round score of 82 (+10) to round out the Rebel scores Friday. The lowest four scores are factored into the team total.
Sophia Sheridan of Cal remained in the lead by shooting a one-over 73 for a two-round total of 142 (-2) and she is the player under par heading into the final round. She is two strokes ahead of Dewi Schreefel who shot a one-under 71 Friday and is at even-par 144 for the tournament.
