ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Elena Kurokawa and Grace Woo both finished in the top 10 to lead the UNLV women's golf team to a fourth-place finish Wednesday at the Dick McGuire Invitational held at the UNM Championship Golf Course.
Kurokawa fired her second-consecutive sub par round and the reigning Mountain West Conference player of the year got her senior season off to a strong start, carding a total of 216 (-3) to finish fifth. Right behind her was Woo, who tied for sixth with a score of 217 (-2) in her first collegiate tournament. As a team UNLV finished the tournament with a score of 883 (+7), 10 strokes behind Pepperdine, which won the tournament.
The Wave took home double honors at the tournament as the team won the title with a score of 873 (-3) while Eileen Vargas took home medalist honors with a 211 (-8). Vargas shot a final round 68 (-5), the best score of the tournament. Texas A&M was the only other team to finish below par as the Aggies finished with an 875 (-1). New Mexico came in third with an 882 (+6), followed by UNLV and Ohio State 886 (+10). Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M and Carolina Llano tied for second with a score of 213 (-6) and Mikaela Backstedt of New Mexico finished fourth with a score of 215 (-4) and then Kurokawa rounded out the top five.
Da Sol Chung, another freshman for UNLV, finished in the top 20, wrapping up her first collegiate tournament with a three-round score of 221 (+2) to finish in a tie for 19th. Seema Sadekar finished tied for 45th with a score of 229 (+10) and Allison Chell came in 80th with a total of 236 (+17). Young Pak competed for the Rebels as an individual, finishing tied for 85th with a score of 240 (+21).
UNLV will have the following weekend off before returning to the links for the Edean Ihalfeldt Invitational, a three-day tournament hosted by the University of Washington on Oct. 10-12 at the Sahalee Country Club in Redmond, Wash.
