Rebels Head East Looking For Lobos, Falcons

The Rebels hit the road once again for the fourth time in six weeks. After opening the Mountain West Conference season with a split of its two games at home against Wyoming and Colorado State, the team travels east to take on New Mexico and Air Force. UNLV takes a 5-8 overall record and a 1-1 Mountain West Conference mark into the match Friday evening in Albuquerque. The Lobos are off to one of their best starts in school history, while the Falcons are struggling to find wins on the court.

Last Week In Review

The Rebels returned home for only the second time in the 2005 campaign with the opening of its Mountain West Conference schedule. UNLV went the easy route with a 3-0 victory over the Wyoming Cowgirls on Thursday (Sept. 22), but were defeated in a tough four-game match by the Colorado State Rams on Saturday (Sept. 24).

With its 30-22, 30-18, 30-26 win over Wyoming, UNLV extended its winning streak over the Cowgirls to five games dating back to 2003.. The Rebels used two 17-kill efforts from Brittani Lumsden and Maria Aladjova to keep the Cowgirls out of the win column. Lumsden added a match-high 17 digs to register her fifth double-double of the season. UNLVout hit Wyoming 57-to-40 in the kill department and .317-to-.202 in hitting percentage. Melody Nua picked up 42 of UNLV's 51 assists on kills. Jada Walker added 12 digs to give the team two players in double-digits.

Colorado State entered the contest with a six-game winning streak and pushed it to seven with its 3-1 win over UNLV. The contest could have gone either way, but CSU held on with scores of 30-26, 37-35, 19-30, 30-21. The teams fought back and forth throughout the first two games before the Rebels ran away with game three and the Rams did the same with the fourth.

The first two games of the match were close as in game one there were seven ties and in game two there were 17. In game one, UNLV evened the score at 20-20, but CSU won 10 of the following 16 points. In the second game, the Rebels had five game-point opportunities, but were unable to find the winning score.

Neither team had a good night on the attacking side of the ball. CSU out hit UNLV 62-to-52 and .205-to-.112, respectively. All four of UNLV's games were played a hitting percentage no higher than .189. CSU had to games over the .200 mark: game one at .256 and game four at .500.

Three Rebels posted double-digit kill figures. Lumsden paced the team with her sixth double-double of the season as she nailed 12 kills and dug out 18 Ram attacks. Michelle Banks had 11 kills to Lauren Miramontes' 10. Melody Nua had 44 assists. Jada Walker had 14 digs.
