ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - One week after falling at home to New Mexico 4-1, UNLV shook up its lineup by starting six freshmen, and almost pulled off a huge upset on the road before the 25th-ranked Lobos escaped with a 1-0 overtime victory in front of over 2,000 fans Saturday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer contest.
"It was a great stepping stone for the program to take a top-25 team in overtime and have a chance to win," said first-year head coach Mario Sanchez. "The lineup change gave us a different look from last week's game, and put us in a better position to win the game."
UNLV (0-12-2, 0-6) limited the Lobos to just three shots in the first half, but New Mexico (10-3-2, 5-1) was able to step up its offense in the second half, taking 12 shots. However, the Rebels were not letting UNM get any inside shots, keeping them in the game.
New Mexico finally broke through in the 97th minute, when Justin Davis scored his first goal of the year from the top of the box, that just got past UNLV goalkeeper Calvin Bailey.
The Lobos finished the game with an 18-5 advantage on shots, and 4-1 edge on corner kicks. Bailey was credited with three saves in the loss, while Mike Graczyk posted two saves to earn the shutout.
UNLV returns to action next weekend, beginning with a road contest at San Jose State on Thursday at 7 pm.
