FORT WORTH, Texas - The UNLV men's golf team won its third-round consolation bracket match on Monday during the second day of play at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship at Colonial Country Club.
The eighth-seeded Rebels defeated 12th-seeded Washington, 3-2, and will face 10th-seeded Arizona State in the consolation final on Tuesday.
UNLV senior Ryan Keeney remained the only Rebel to win all his matches at the event as he defeated Nick Taylor, 3 and 2. The other Rebel victories were recorded by sophomore Blake Trimble (over Zach Bixler, 3 and 1) and junior Matt Kinsinger (over Alex Prugh, 6 and 5). Junior C.J. Gatto lost to Erik Olson, 6 and 5, while junior Jarred Texter lost to Chris Killmer, 2 and 1.
Lamar and Oklahoma State won their semifinal matches to advance to the championship.
Lamar continued its run with its third straight upset. The 11th-seeded Cardinals, whose top player Dawie Van Der Walt was unavailable because of competing in the World Amateur Team Championship, squeaked by in-state rival and seventh-seeded Texas A&M by the total holes won tiebreaker, 25-23. Oliver Bekker put Lamar on the board first by beating Robert Gates, 7 and 5, but the Cardinals were trailing in three of the other four matches with five holes remaining. The Aggies countered when Bronson Burgoon downed Casey Clendenon, 4 and 2, and Trey Todd defeated Lamar's Justin Harding, 2-up, to take the lead. Texas A&M's Martin Piller and Russell Helson of Lamar would halve the next match. In the final match the Cardinals' Dusty Smith and the Aggies' Matt Van Zandt were all square going into the final hole. Van Zandt conceded a three-foot putt to Smith and needed to make a seven-footer to halve the match and clinch the victory for Texas A&M, but missed.
Fourth-seeded Oklahoma State, which was playing without PING First-Team All-America selections Pablo Martin and Jonathan Moore, who also competed in the World Amateur, advanced to the final by beating top-seeded Florida, 3-1-1. The Gators won the first point of the match after Manuel Villegas defeated Trent Leon, 2 and 1. Trent Whiltekiller tied the score with a 2 and 1 win against Tyler Brown in a match he led the final eight holes before OSU's Tyler Leon and Billy Horschel halved. The Cowboys took the lead with a 2 and 1 Chris Ward victory over Tyson Alexander after Alexander hit the water on the 17th hole of the match. Ryan Posey clinched the berth to the championship for OSU with a par on the final hole to defeat Toby Ragland, 1-up.
In other third round action, Duke eliminated Clemson and Georgia ousted UCLA in the winners consolation A bracket. In the other consolation bracket match, Coastal Carolina was sent home by Arizona State.
Final round action begins at 8 a.m. CT Tuesday.
