FORT WORTH, Texas - The UNLV men's golf team won the consolation bracket championship by defeating Arizona State, 4-1, on Tuesday during the final day of play at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship at Colonial Country Club.
Senior Ryan Keeney paced the eighth-seeded Rebels over the 10th-seeded Sun Devils by winning his fourth match of the tournament, 6 and 4, over Ryan Kelley. Keeney was the only Rebel to win each of his four matches this week.
The other Rebel victories on Tuesday were turned in by junior Jarred Texter (over Tristan Bierenbroodspot, 5 and 3), junior Matt Kinsinger (over Fredrik Andersson, 3 and 2) and sophomore Eddie Olson (over Steele DeWald, 3 and 2). Sophomore Blake Trimble suffered UNLV's only loss of the day (to Phil Telliard, 2 and 1).
Fourth-seeded Oklahoma State defeated 11th-seeded Lamar, 3-2, to claim the event's championship, which marked its second match play title in three years.
Trent Whitekiller put Oklahoma State on the board first when he routed Justin Harding, 6 and 5. Lamar evened the match when Dusty Smith parred No. 18 to defeat Chris Ward, 1-up. The Cowboys would claim the next two matches - a 2 and 1 Ryan Posey victory against Oliver Bekker and Tyler Leon's 4 and 2 win over Russell Helson - to clinch the championship. Lamar's Casey Clendenon earned the final team point of the match after downing Trent Leon, 3 and 2.
In the other final round matches, seventh-seeded Texas A&M posted a big 4-1 victory against top-seeded Florida with its closest individual victory being 3 and 2. Ninth-seeded Duke won fifth place by knocking off second-seeded Georgia, 3-2, with two matches going 19 holes.
UNLV's fall season has come to a close. The Rebels will open the spring on Jan. 29-30 at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
