LAS VEGAS - San Jose State took advantage of two misplays by UNLV on defense to claim a 2-1 win over the Rebels in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Field.
It was a tight contest in the first half, with UNLV (0-10-2, 0-4) taking five shots to four for the Spartans (5-5-1, 2-1). SJSU would break into the scoring column in the 57th minute, as they got off a shot towards the Rebel goal. A Rebel defender attempted to head the ball out, but instead the ball was headed into the left side of the goal for an own goal, and a 1-0 SJSU lead.
Hiroki Akiyama put the Spartans up 2-0 in the 73rd minute, when he blasted a hard shot from 35 yards out that slipped through the hands of Rebel goalkeeper Calvin Bailey and into the back of the net for the score.
UNLV made things interesting in the final minutes. Following a Spartan foul on the left side near their goal, Lamar Neagle sent the ensuing free kick into the middle of the box where it was headed in by Ben Haugland to make the score 2-1 in the 88th minute. The Rebels had two more chances to make the tying score, but couldn't get past Spartan goalkeeper Richard Mann.
Mann finished with six saves in goal, while Bailey made one. UNLV actually held a 15-9 advantage on shots, while the Spartans had five corner kicks to three for the host Rebels.
The Rebels will host their third straight MPSF game of the year on Friday, as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The UNLV women will play New Mexico at 5 pm, while the Rebel men will take on New Mexico in a MPSF contest at 7:30 pm, both games to be played at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
