Nov. 1, 2006

LAS VEGAS - Results

UNLV women's golf finished 10th and Da Sol Chung earned a top-10 spot on the leaderboard on Wednesday at the fifth annual Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown, played at Anthem Country Club.

The Rebels fired a 298 (+10) as a team for the second straight day and had a 54-hole total of 896 (+32) in their first home tournament of the year. Chung led UNLV at the tournament, carding a two-under 70 on the final round to finish with a 215 (-1) and in a tie for eighth place.

Oklahoma State ran away with team honors, as the Cowgirls were the only team in the field to finish below par with a final team score of nine-under 855. OSU was five-under par (283) on Wednesday and on Tuesday the Cowgirls shot eight-under par (280) to take command of the tournament. Arizona State (865, +1) was second followed by Pepperdine (871, +7) in third. Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M won medalist honors with a 54-hole score of seven-under 209, two strokes ahead Pernilla Lundberg of OSU and Azahara Munoz of Arizona State.

Chung's finish was the best mark of the year for the sophomore, who had not cracked the top 10 in her last two tournaments after posting nine such finishes last year as a freshman. Chung birdied four holes to go along with 12 pars and two bogies on the par 72 course as she broke out of her modest slump.

Next for the Rebels was freshman Natasha Krishna, who was one of five UNLV student-athletes competing in their first home tournament of their careers. Krishna finished tied for 31st with a three-round score of 223 (+7). Another freshman, Kristin Ingram, was the next Rebel on the leaderboard, placing in a tied for 47th with a score of 227 (+11). Allison Chell rounded out the UNLV scorecard with a 241 (+25) which had her tied for 82nd. UNLV senior Seema Sadekar shot a three-over par 75 on Wednesday and a two-over par 74 the day before, but she missed the first round due to an illness.

UNLV also had three individuals play in the tournament, and the highest finisher of the group was Kasi Lee, who came in tied for 52nd with a score of 229 (+13). Nicole McGirr and Melissa Mabanta both were playing in their first tournament as Rebels and had solid showings in their debut. McGirr came in tied for 60th with a 230 (+14) and Mabanta tied for 73rd with a 234 (+18).

UNLV's final fall tournament will be in two weeks when the Rebels play at the Aloha Purdue Collegiate Invitational, held in Kauai, Hawaii, on Nov. 22-23.
