LAS VEGAS - A strong defensive effort and career games from Latosha Pace (17 points), Brittany Halberg (12 points) and Samantha Stickler (12 points) gave UNLV an easy 70-40 victory over Elon in the second game of the Lady Rebel Shootout on Friday afternoon in the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV advances to meet Wisconsin, 56-53 winners over Kansas State, in the championship game on Saturday at 3:30 pm, while Elon and KSU will tipoff in the consolation game at 1 pm.
The Lady Rebels held Elon to just 26% shooting (16-of-61) for the game, and held a 47-36 edge on the boards, UNLV also forced 20 turnovers, and finished with 12 steals and six blocks in the game. UNLV also shot 48.2% (26-of-56) from the floor.
Halberg would finish the game with 12 points and a career-high eight assists. She played the most minutes of the starters, as with the Lady Rebels up by plus-20 for the majority of the second half, UNLV was able to rest several starters for tomorrow's championship game. It also allowed its bench to get more playing time, which Pace and Stickler both took advantage of. Pace scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half, and finished shooting 7-of-11 form the floor, while Stickler was 6-of-7 for 12 points, and grabbed seven rebounds as well.
Leading 9-7 four minutes into the game, UNLV clamped down on defense, allowing just four points over the next 10 minutes. The 22-4 run gave the Lady Rebels a 31-11 edge with 6:40 to play in the opening half, and Elon could come no closer then 16 the rest of the game. The largest lead was 32, 70-38 on a pair of Kim Koeven free throws with a minute to play.
Elon was led by Tierra Bumbrey with nine points. Nikko King, Rachel Hester, and Amber Wall all added eight points for the Phoenix.
In the first game, Wisconsin trailed 11-2 early, but slowly climbed back into the game. The Badgers took the lead for good with five minutes to play, and held on for the win, despite shooting just 29.1% (16-of-55) from the floor. Jolene Anderson led Wisconsin with 12 points, while Mariah Dunham added 11. For Kansas State, Kimberly Dietz posted a game-high 14 points, and Marlies Gipson added 12.
