Tough Shooting Night Sinks Lady Rebels

LAS VEGAS - A 16-minute stretch without a made field goal was the story of the game for UNLV, as the Lady Rebels fell to Wisconsin 67-51 in the championship game of the Lady Rebel Shootout on Saturday afternoon in the Thomas & Mack Center. The Badgers improved to 6-0 with the win, while UNLV dropped to 2-3 on the season. In the consolation game, Kansas State (4-1) took down Elon (2-3) by a score of 75-34.

UNLV jumped out to an 11-7 lead just four minutes into the game thanks to Sequoia Holmes, who made her first four shots. The game was tied six more times over the next 10 minutes. Following a Shamela Hampton layup that gave UNLV a 21-19 lead, Holmes picked up her second foul, and sat out most of the rest of the half. The UNLV offense died without her on the floor, as they would not made a field goal for the rest of the half. An 11-1 spurt by Wisconsin gave the Badgers a 30-22 lead with 1:57 to play in the half. Eight free throws, six from UNLV, made the score 32-28 going into the break.

The second half was much of the same for UNLV, with nine missed field goals to begin the stanza. A three-point play from Hampton finally broke the drought with 11:01 on the clock, following a 10-1 run by Wisconsin to begin the half. UNLV actually closed to within 10, 50-40 with 8:37 to play on a Brittany Halberg jumper, but the Badgers put the game away with a 14-3 run over the next five minutes.

The Lady Rebels finished the game shooting 18-of-51 from the floor for 35.3%, and missed all 10 of its three-point tries. UNLV also struggled at the line, making just 15-of-31 for 48.4%. They were outrebounded by six, 40-34, as well. Leading UNLV was Holmes with 13 points and six rebounds. Halberg added nine points, while Hampton posted a career-high 12.

Wisconsin had three players in double figures, highlighted by Janese Banks, who was 6-of-8 for 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Danielle Ward was next with 16 points, while Jolene Anderson posted 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Badgers shot 45.3% for the game, including 52.2% in the second half, and were 16-of-23 at the line.

Anderson was named the Tournament MVP, and was one of three Badgers on the all-tournament team, along with Ward and Banks. Also named all-tournament was Halberg, and Kimberly Dietz of Kansas State.

In the consolation game, Kansas State shot 59% and placed four players in double figures on the way to the 41-point victory. They were led by Dietz's 18 points, while Claire Coggins added 15. Elon, which shot just 23%, was paced by Shashonna Moore and Amber Wall, both with seven each.

With its five-game homestand completed, UNLV will now play two straight on the road, beginning with a contest at Southern Utah on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 pm (PST) in Cedar City.
