LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams split its Mountain West Conference opener on Saturday afternoon, with the Rebel men (1-1, 1-0) posting a 166-115 win, while the Utes prevailed on the women's side 142-120 over the UNLV women (0-2, 0-1).

The men were paced by four double-winners, and the Rebels won 12 of 16 events to claim the victory. Johan Claar won both distance events in the meet, taking the 1000 free in 9:24.24 and the 500 free in 4:35.37. Devin Phillips swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 50.80 and the 200 in 1:51.01, while Jonas Andersson placed first in both the 100 (57.33) and 200 (2:06.18) breaststroke events. Brandon Nelms was the fourth double-event winner, as he placed first in both the 50 (20.76) and 100 (45.46) freestyle. Also winning individual events was Richard Hortness in the 200 free (1:40.46), John Byers in the 100 fly (51.39), and Tamas Bosnyak in the 200 IM (1:53.78). The Rebels swept both relays as well, as Phillips, Andersson, Tiger Christian, and Nelms teamed up to win the 200 medley relay in 1:32.29. The 400 free relay squad of Byers, Phillips, Nelms, and Hortness took first in 3:03.05.

The Rebel women stayed close to the Utes the entire meet, but could take over the lead, as Utah would win six of the 16 events for the afternoon. Pacing UNLV was Lani Seaman, who won both the 500 free (5:03.41) and the 1000 free (10:14.13). Three more Rebels each won one individual event, beginning with Amanda Weinbrecht in the 100 back (57.89), Bailey Kuestermeyer in the 200 breast (2:20.72), and Marina Sandback in the 100 fly (56.92). Weinbrecht also joined up with Kim Bonney, Sandback, and Katie Wronn to take first in the 200 medley relay (1:46.45).

Both Rebel teams will return to action against BYU on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 pm at Buchanan Natatorium.
