LAS VEGAS - Looking for its second straight win after its huge upset of first-place and 20th-ranked Denver on Friday night, UNLV (1-15-2, 1-9) was dealt one final tough loss instead, as Air Force (5-12-1, 4-6) rallied to claim a 2-1 win in overtime on the Rebels' Senior Day Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action. It was the season finale for both teams.
UNLV notched the first goal of the game when freshman forward Marcos Balladares took the ball down the middle of the field and found sophomore forward Lamar Neagle unmarked on the left side. Neagle drove in before unloading a shot from 20 yards out across the cage to the far right side of the goal for the score in the 31st minute, giving UNLV a 1-0 advantage.
Air Force would tie the game later in the first half, when an initial Falcon shot was shanked off to the right side. Nathan Holloway tracked down the ball before it crossed over the line, and centered the ball that was then knocked into the goal from just five yards out by Brandan Greenaway in the 40th minute.
Though both teams had their chances in the second half, neither could find the back of the net. Air Force would score the golden goal game-winner just 1:56 into overtime, following a series of shots against Rebel goalkeeper Calvin Bailey. Bailey stopped the first two shots, and appeared to have collected the ball into his grasp following the second one, but Josh Rhynard was able to gain possession of the ball and force it through Bailey from a yard out for the score in the 92nd minute.
Bailey finished with three saves in goal, while Falcon goalkeeper Paul Elsbernd was credited with five saves. UNLV held a 15-9 edge on shots and a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.
