Feb. 20, 2006

TUCSON, Ariz. - UNLV women's golf got its spring season off to a strong start Monday, as the Rebels are in second place heading into the second day of the Wildcat Invitational, where 11 of the top 15 teams in golf are competing.

The No. 12 Rebels are currently two under and are nearly through the second round, which was suspended due to darkness and will be finished tomorrow, along with the final round of the 54-hole tournament. After finishing their first round today, teams took a short break and then started their second 18 holes.

UNLV trails No. 9 Arizona State by three strokes and is ahead of top-ranked and defending national champion Duke by one stroke. Cal (+3) and No. 2 UCLA (+2) round out the top five.

Grace Woo is alone in third and Da Sol Chung is tied for fourth as the dynamic freshmen are leading the Rebels, who also have Elena Kurokawa (T-22nd) and Seema Sadekar (T-31st) in the top 40. Woo has three holes remaining in her second round and is sitting at four under, three shots behind Sophia Sheridan of Cal who is at seven under, who was two holes away from finishing her second round before play was halted.

Chung is in a group of four who are three under and she has two holes to finish up Tuesday before starting her final round. Kurokawa is at two over with two holes to play while Sadekar was able to wrap up her second round and has a three-over 145 (74-71).

Kasi Lee, a freshman transfer from Tulane, made her UNLV debut Monday and struggled, carding an opening-round 87 (+16) and is currently 23 over with two holes remaining in her second round. Allison Chell was also playing, but the Rebel sophomore was playing as an individual and is currently 12 over with four holes remaining in her second round.

Players will finish their second round tomorrow morning starting at 8:00 a.m. (PST) and then the final round will get underway with a shotgun start on the par-72, 6,134-yard Arizona National Course.
