Palm Springs, Calif. - The UNLV softball team (7-6) opened up the second day of the Palm Spring Classic with a 3-1 win over Oklahoma State (2-5) and a 5-0 loss to Texas Tech (5-9) at Big League Dreams Sports Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.
In the first game, the Cowgirls scored their lone run of the game when its leadoff hitter reached on a dropped third strike and made her way around to score.
UNLV fought back to take the lead for good on a two-run double by Marissa Nichols to left. Nichols came up to the plate following a single by Brittany Freight and back-to-back walks to Kendall Fearn and Britney Hillyer.
The Rebels tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an single by Fearn. Freight and Caitlyn Paus hit consecutive singles to left. Prior to Fearn's single, Freight stole third to bring herself 60-feet from home.
Shannon Crisp (4-1) notched the win for the Rebels as she threw four innings of relief. Crisp struck out seven in the outing, while allowing two hits and two walks. Christie Robinson started the game and went three innings. She allowed one run, four hits and one walk in her effort in the circle.
In the second game, the Rebels bats were holstered until late in the game. The game was scoreless until Crisp loaded the bases in the fifth and walked in the subsequent winning run. In the sixth, the Rebel defense faltered and allowed Tech to increase with four more runs. UNLV committed four errors in that sixth inning.
Crisp (4-2) suffered the loss as she allowed only one run in 4.2 innings of work. She allowed five hits, while walking four and striking out seven. Robinson relieved Crisp and got a groundball to end the fifth. In the sixth, she gave up four hits and four runs. Of those four runs only one was earned. Becky McDonald entered the game in the seventh and closed out the Red Raiders.
Up next for UNLV are back-to-back games versus two top-25 squads on Saturday afternoon. First up for the Rebels is a matchup with #8/8 Texas A&M at 3pm. The #4/4 Texas Longhorns follow shortly after the conclusion of the game versus the Aggies.
