Final Stats
HONOLULU - The UNLV softball team (13-13) fell behind 5-1 through five innings to the host Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine in the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament. UNLV attempted a comeback in the sixth inning as the offense pushed three runs across to bring the deficit to one run with an inning to play, but eventually fell 5-4.
The Rebels put the first run on the board on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Maggie Livreri. Brittany Freight began the game with a double to left field. She advanced to third on a wild pitch with Livreri at the plate and came home on the fly out to left.
Hawai'i evened things up in the bottom frame of the inning off of a double by Valana Manuma. Clare Warwick reached on a one-out single and went to third on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Brandi Peiler. Manuma came up and promptly hit a shot just past the third base bag.
UH took a 2-1 lead in the third after Tanisha Milca walked and came around to score on a fielder's choice hit to Maggie Livreri at shortstop by Kaulana Gould. The Rainbow Wahine collected three singles in the inning to go along with three fielder's choice grounders to leave the bases loaded in the inning.
The Rainbow Wahine added to its lead with three runs in the fifth. The first three batters reached on singles with the fourth batter, Gail Matsushima, bringing home the first run as she was hit by a pitch. Kristi Yoshizawa plated the second run on a sacrifice fly hit to centerfield. The third run came home on a single by Kate Robinson. The first two runs to score in the inning were credited to Christie Robinson's pitching line, while the third was Shannon Crisp's.
The Rebels rallied and pulled within one run in the sixth as they plated three. Bri Bernardi began the inning with a single and went to third on a double by Maggie Livreri. Following the first out of the inning, Kendall Fearn brought Bernardi home with a single. Caitlyn Paus hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Livreri. Sandy Nakamura came to the plate in a pinch hitting role and deposited a double to the left field fence to score Fearn from first.
Christie Robinson (4-4) got the start for the Rebels as she threw 4.0 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. She left the circle in the bottom of the fifth after Hawai'i began the inning with back-to-back singles. Crisp closed out the game in allowing one run on three hits.
Up next for UNLV is a single game in Los Angeles, Calif., against UCLA at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, March 14. The Rebels will stay in California to play in the Judi Garman Classic (March 16-19) in Fullerton, Calif., to be hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, March 16.
