Rebels One Back

March 13, 2006

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Seema Sadekar and Da Sol Chung each fired rounds under par to pace the UNLV women's golf team, which is one shot off the lead after the opening round of the UNLV Spring Invitational.

With sunny skies and hardly any wind, scoring conditions were prime on the Boulder Creek Golf Club course, as 11 players recorded sub-par rounds, led by Kaye Hoey of Long Beach State and Shannon Johnson of Indiana, who each had a four-under 68. Hoey's effort helped LBSU grab the first-round lead, as the 49ers rolled to a one-over 289. UNLV carded a 290 (+2), followed by Fresno State (294, +6), Campbell (296, +8) and New Mexico and Indiana tied for fifth with a 301 (+13).

A group of four players at two-under trail Hoey and Johnson in the race for medalist honors, and included in that group is Sadekar.

Sadekar had six birdies, including four on the back nine to lead the Rebels as the sophomore shot her second-lowest round of the year. Chung, the reigning Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Month, was a shot behind with a one-under 71. Grace Woo (73, +1), Young Pak (76, +4) and Elena Kurokawa (81, +9) rounded out the Rebel top five.

UNLV fielded a second team at the invite, and Allison Chell had a 79 (+7) while transfer Kasi Lee, playing in her second tournament at UNLV, matched Chell with a 79 as well. Nicole McGirr (83, +11), Erin McGough (92, +20) and Chelsea Pendleton (95, +23) rounded out the Rebel second team.

Play continues tomorrow on the par-72, 6,153-yard course at 7:30 a.m. (PST) with teams teeing off on holes one and 10. Fans can get full results and follow the tournament live by clicking here.
