LAS VEGAS - UNLV men's swimmers Joe Bartoch and Adam Martinson, and men's tennis player Romain Massaro have all been voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII University Division Men's At-Large Team as selected by sports information directors, while swimmer Kim Bonney was selected to the Women's At-Large Team.
Bartoch is making a repeat appearance on the Academic All-District First Team, and will be included on the national ballot along with teammate and classmate Martinson. Massaro was a second team selection, as was Bonney for the women's squad.
Bartoch, a native of London, Ontario, Canada, was named the 2006 Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Year after claiming titles in the 100 free and the 100 fly in school- and league-record times en route to helping UNLV to its second-straight conference championship. He was also runner-up in the 50 free and swam on four first-place relays. At the 2006 NCAA Championships, he earned his fourth career honorable mention honor after helping UNLV to a ninth-place finish in the 200 free relay, the highest finish in school history for a relay team.
Bartoch, a two-time All-MWC Academic Team member, carries a cumulative GPA of 3.54 with a major in physical education.
Martinson, a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, won his third straight MWC 200 back title at the 2006 championship meet. He was also a runner-up in the 100 back for the third straight year, and placed ninth in the 200 IM. In addition, Martinson led off the 400 medley relay team that claimed first at the MWC meet. He holds the fastest time in UNLV history in the 200 back and second fastest in the 100 back.
Martinson, a two-time All-MWC Academic Team member, carries a cumulative GPA of 3.80 with a major in environmental science.
Massaro, a native of Paris. France, was named UNLV's Most Outstanding Male Scholar-Athlete earlier this month. A four-year starter on the nationally ranked Rebel tennis team, he posted a personal-best doubles mark of 17-8 this season and finished his career with 47 singles victories. The tennis team's representative on the UNLV Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Massaro is a three-time Academic All-MWC and ITA Scholar-Athlete honoree and boasts a 3.87 GPA in communication studies. He is only the third Rebel men's player to be voted to a CoSIDA regional or national academic honor and the first since 1999.
Bonney, a sophomore and native of Cape Town, South Africa, claimed runner-up honors in the 200 IM at the 2006 MWC Championships, and also placed fourth in the 200 breast, fifth in the 100 breast, and swam breaststroke on the third-place 200 and 400 medley relays. Bonney was the 2005 MWC 200 breast champion in her first year on the Rebels. She was also recently named UNLV's Most Outstanding Female Scholar-Athlete earlier this month as she holds the highest cumulative GPA at the school.
Bonney, who was named Academic All-MWC in 2005, carries a cumulative GPA of 3.90 with a major in accounting.
The at-large all-district team represents the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible.
District VIII is made up of schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
