COLUMBUS, Ohio - UNLV freshman Da Sol Chung became the first women's golfer to earn first team All-America honors, as she was named to the NGCA All-American First Team on Friday night. The honor was announced at the awards banquet following the NCAA Championships, where Chung finished third.
Chung finished with a four-round total of 290 (76-72-70-72, +2) at the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University and that third-place finish is the highest ever for a Rebel golfer.
"When I recruited her (Chung) I knew that I signed a talent that could be great," said UNLV head coach Missy Ringler. "It is not a surprise to me what she has accomplished because she is such a hard worker."
Her strong play at the NCAA Championships this past week capped a magical freshman year for Chung, who won medalist honors at the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Chung was named the MWC Player of the Year and Co-Freshman of the Year. She was also named to the All-West Regional Team following her fourth-place finish.
Chung now holds the record for lowest scoring average in a season with a 72.70 this year, which is also the career best in Rebel history. She also set the UNLV record for low score in a 54-hole tournament with a four-under 209 at the Wildcat Invitational in February. Chung was named the MWC Golfer of the Month following that performance.
Chung joins Sunny Oh as the only two All-Americans for UNLV, although the program finished just its fifth year of competition. Oh earned honorable-mention honors as a freshman in 2003 and second-team honors in 2004.
