Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team (24-35, 8-12 MWC) closed out its regular season with doubleheader losses to BYU (40-18, 15-5 MWC) on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. The Cougar bats clawed 19 hits on the day, which lead to 22 runs for the visitors. BYU took game one in five innings, 10-0. UNLV's offense came to life in game two, but a four-run lead through three wasn't enough, as the Cougars scored 12 over the final four innings for a 12-6 victory.
Game one was a pitcher's dual from the start, as Shannon Crisp and Summer Tobias held the opposing offenses in check. Once the third inning rolled around, BYU accumulated all of its offense in the final three frames.
In the third inning, BYU scattered six hits for six runs. A walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs for Andrea Ramirez to come up and drop a single into left field. Jodi Norton scored the first run, while Jennifer Whiteley followed her in when the ball was misplayed in left. With runners on second and first, Emi Snow cranked out a home run to left. Ianeta Le'i followed Snow's shot with one of her own for the sixth run of the inning.
Becky McDonald entered in the top of the fourth and was touched for two runs in each of the final two innings. Snow brought home one run on a single in the fourth and came around to score on a double by Le'i. In the fifth, Norton hit a two-run homer to center, which scored Paige Paramore.
Crisp (9-15) took the loss, as she allowed six runs on six hits in three innings of work. McDonald allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in two innings of relief.
Tobias (22-9) got the win, as she went threw five shut out innings. She allowed five hits.
In game two, UNLV's offense took advantage of early errors by the Cougars in the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead. The Rebels expanded their lead to four, with two more runs in the third. BYU began its come back in the fourth with three runs and took the lead for good with four in the sixth. Trailing 7-4, the Rebels pulled within one in the sixth with two runs. BYU struck for five in the seventh and pulled away with the 12-6 final.
In the first inning, Brittany Bolinger began the game by reaching on a fielding error on a ball hit to second. Bolinger moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Freight. Maggie Livreri plated Bolinger on a single to center. Livreri took second on a groundout by Crisp. She came around to score on an errant throw after stealing third.
Bolinger began the third inning with a walk. The walk prompted BYU to bring in Tobias in replace of starter, Daniella Urincho. Livreri welcomed Tobias to the game with a two-run blast to left field.
In the fourth, BYU pulled within one with three runs on two hits and a Rebel error. With one on, Le'i hit a two-run home run. Later in the inning, with runners in scoring position, Monica Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly down the left field line for the third run.
After a scoreless fifth, BYU scored one run on a ground out and three more on a home run to left by Tracee Hoch.
UNLV managed to score two in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Crisp. Livreri scored on the home run and was sitting on second base after hitting a double to right field.
With BYU up by one, heading into the seventh, the Cougars scattered four hits and scored five runs to push their lead to six. Crisp (9-16) took the loss, after entering the contest in the fifth inning. She threw 2.0 innings and allowed nine runs (five earned) on five hits. Christie Robinson earned a no-decision with 5.0 innings of work. She left the game with a 4-3 lead, after giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits.
Tobias (23-9) picked up her second win of the day with 4.2 innings of relief work. She gave up three runs and three hits, but held the Rebel bats in-check. Urincho was taken off the hook, when the Cougars battled back for the win. She threw 2.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) and two hits.
Up next for UNLV is the Mountain West Conference Tournament, hosted by the Rebels. All games will be played at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels will play in game two on Thursday, May 11 at 2 pm, against Colorado State.
