LAS VEGAS - UNLV had a total of 90 student-athletes earn Spring 2006 Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors, the conference announced this week. UNLV's 90 representatives were the third most in the league, behind BYU's 168 and New Mexico's 105. UNLV also had 35 student-athletes named a MWC Scholar-Athlete.
To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MWC team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the school while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their team. To be eligible for selection as a MWC Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition for their athletic team.
The men's swimming and diving team led the way at UNLV with selections to the Academic All-MWC team with an impressive 17 members, which was the most in that sport among MWC programs, while the women's swimming and diving team also had 17 members on the team. Softball also had the most members named from that sport, as 14 Rebels were on this year's academic team. Baseball followed with nine players, with seven named from the women's track team, while men's golf and men's tennis each had six players. Also selected to the team were five from the women's tennis team, four from the men's basketball team, three from the women's golf team, and two from women's basketball.
