2006 Served up: The UNLV Rebels head to the Northwest for three matches in the Baden Cougar Challenge hosted by Washington State in Pullman, Wash. After a 2-1 record in the UNLV Classic, the Rebels will face the Washington State Cougars on Friday and then serve it up against the UC Davis Aggies and the Boise State Broncos on Saturday.

UNLV Classic Revisited: The Rebels began the 2006 season on a strong note and finished even higher, but in between had a bit of a letdown. Last Friday, UNLV jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead over Cal Poly only to watch the Mustangs kick back and win the match in five games (3-2). On Saturday, the Rebels faced two matches on the day with Oral Roberts followed by Oregon State. UNLV, once again, took a 2-0 lead over ORU, but watched the Golden Eagles soar back into contention with a game three win. The Rebels disposed of the Golden Eagles in the fourth and final game to take the match, 3-1. In the final match of the classic, UNLV and OSU played for the rightful claim to second place. The Beavers went up 1-0, but witnessed the Rebels rally to even things up at 1-1 after two and then win games three and four for the come back victory.
Cal Poly was the champion of the classic with its 3-0 mark over the weekend. The Mustangs defeated UNLV in five, OSU in four and ORU in five. In all, the Mustangs had to win all three matches in come-from-behind fashion. CP trailed UNLV 2-0, OSU 1-0 and ORU 1-0 and 2-1. OSU picked up third place with a 1-2 showing, while ORU finished fourth at 0-3.
UNLV Classic Revisited - Statistically: Against Cal Poly: UNLV was out hit .207 to .170 in five games. The Mustangs threw down three more kills than the Rebels, 68-to-65. The Mustangs held a 64-to-62 advantage in assists, but the most glaring statistic was blocking. CP notched 25 total blocks (two solo) to UNLV's nine total (one solo).
UNLV got double-doubles from Maria Aladjova (16 kills, 13 digs), Brittani Lumsden (11 kills, 22 digs), Melody Nua (51 assists, 13 digs) and Michelle Banks (12 kills, 12 digs). Jessica Walters held the highest hitting percentage with a .385 on six kills and one error in 13 attempts.
Against Oral Roberts: UNLV out hit ORU .277 to .145 in four games. The Rebels held a 16-kill advantage with a 73-to-57 tally. UNLV notched 67 assists to ORU's 51 and held a double-digit edge in digs, 81-to-69.
Jennifer Johnson had a match-high 21 kills, while hitting .370. Aladjova had 17 kills, while Lauren Miramontes had 12 and Erin Greenwood had 10. Of all players with 10 or more kills, Greenwood had the highest hitting percentage at .562. Nua assisted on 58 of 67 team assists. Banks and Jada Walker had 19 and 18 digs, respectively, while Camille Cunningham had 16.
Against Oregon State: UNLV saved its best offensive output for its final match of the classic by hitting .290 overall to OSU's .224. UNLV hit above .227 in all four of its games. The Rebels notched 82 kills to the Beavers' 67. Of the six Rebels to register at least one kill, none hit below the .185 mark. The Rebels amassed 73 assists to OSU's 58 and had 91 digs to the Beavers' 79.
Three Rebels picked up double-doubles with Miramontes leading with 25 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .408 and having six blocks. Aladjova had 12 kills and 19 digs and was followed by Banks' 14 kills and 13 digs. Johnson nearly hit a double-double with 19 kills and seven digs. Nua had 65 assists, while Walker had 23 digs.
