Following two losses on the road to open the season, the UNLV men's soccer team return home for their first games on their newly renovated soccer field, hosting the UNLV adidas Invitational this Friday and Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Also playing in the tournament is Temple, UNLV's opponent on Friday night (7 pm), Oregon State, and MPSF member Denver. The Rebels will take on Oregon State on the second day of the tournament on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
UNLV will also be looking for a win in Mario Sanchez's home debut as head coach of the Rebels, after a tough loss at UC Riverside on Tuesday, in which the host Anteaters scored in the final minutes of the game to post a 2-1 victory. This will be the first time UNLV and Temple have ever played before in men's soccer, while the Rebels have met Oregon State three times before, and lost all three, including last year's 3-0 loss in the Oregon State Diadora Classic.
Temple is 1-0 on the year, having defeated Philadelphia University 2-1 on Aug. 26, while a game against Lehigh was postponed due to weather conditions. The Owls scored twice in a one-minute span to earn the win, getting goals from Chris Shelton and Matt Maher. Bryant Hosler played in net for Temple and collected six saves.
Oregon State comes in with a 2-0 record, having posted identical 2-1 victories on the road, at UC Riverside and at Sacramento State. Junior midfielder Nick Webb has a team-high two goals this year, both coming in the 2-1 win at Sacramento State. Bryan Jordan and Alex Hristensen both scored in the Beavers' win at UCR. Packy Deenihan played in goal in both games, and has a 1.00 GAA with four saves.
