ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV women's golf finished tied for second and three Rebels were in the top 20 at the 28th annual Dick McGuire Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at the Championship Course.
In a field that featured eight of the top 30 teams in the country according to Golfweek, the 18th-ranked Rebels shot an 883 (+7) to record their highest finish in five appearances at the tournament. UNLV was led by sophomore Da Sol Chung, who carded a 216 (-3) to finish tied for fifth.
"This is nice to reaffirm what I thought about our team heading into the season," said UNLV head coach Missy Ringler. "It was a great opener for us."
Arizona State, ranked second in the country, ran away with the tournament, carding a seven-under 869 through three rounds to win by 14 strokes. The Rebels shared second with Mountain West Conference member BYU while another MWC team, TCU, placed fourth with an 889 (+13). South Carolina wrapped up the top five with a two-day score of 890 (+14). Catherine Matranga won medalist honors by one stroke, as the Horned Frog carded a 214 (-5) to finish ahead of a group of three at four under.
Even par was the round of the day for the Rebels as Chung and freshmen Natasha Krishna and Kristin Ingram all carded scores of 73 on the 6,069-yard course Tuesday. Krishna nearly cracked the top 10 in her first collegiate tournament, finishing tied for 11th with a total of even-par 219. Ingram was just three strokes behind in her first tournament, finishing tied for 18th with a three-over 222.
Seema Sadekar had a solid beginning to her senior year, coming in tied for 39th with a total of 228 (+9) while sophomore Kasi Lee tied for 57th with a score of 232 (+13). Allison Chell also played in the tournament as an individual, and the junior tied for 81st with a 240 (+21).
UNLV will have the following weekend off before resuming play at the Fall Preview on Sept. 22-24 at the Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. This is the first time that the Rebels have been invited to the Fall Preview and the Legends Course is also the same course that will host the 2007 NCAA Championships.
