LAS VEGAS - UNLV (0-4-2) scored the first goal of the contest, and played a strong defensive game to earn a 1-1 double-overtime tie against St. Mary's (2-2-3) in the second game of the UNLV Rebel Classic men's soccer tournament on Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. In the first game of the day, UC Irvine posted a 1-0 victory over UMBC.
Sophomore forward Lamar Neagle notched his second goal of the season, as he took a pass from Ben Haugland and sent a shot to the far left post for a goal in the 24th minute. Nearing the end of the first half, St. Mary's would tie the score, thanks to a shot by David Blanchard. Matthew Fitzgerald began the play with a cross into the box, that Blanchard then sent to the far right post for the tying goal in the 42nd minute.
Though both teams took four shots each in the first half, the Gaels dominated the second half, taking 11 shots to none for the Rebels. However, St. Mary's could not find the back of the net after being forced to take most of its shots from outside, while Rebel freshman goalkeeper Calvin Bailey, making his second career start, came up with three saves in the second 45 minutes. The Gaels' last best chance came in the 90th minute when Fitzgerald blasted a shot from midfield that hit the goalpost before bouncing back outside.
The Rebels played a tougher game in the two overtime periods, matching St. Mary's shot for shot, with both teams taking one each in the first overtime, and two each in the second. Bailey would finish the game with four saves in goal, while Keenen Flynn posted three saves for the Gaels.
In the first game, Matt Murphy scored just nine minutes into the game, off an assist from Brandon Tate, and UC Irvine (4-1-1) kept UMBC (1-5-1) out of the goal to post a 1-0 victory.
The UNLV Rebel Classic concludes on Sunday, with UC Irvine and St. Mary's playing at 12 pm, while the Rebels will host UMBC in a 2:30 pm contest.
