LAS VEGAS - UMBC (2-5-1) scored two second-half goals to rally past UNLV (0-5-2) 2-1 in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic men's soccer tournament on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. In the first game of the day, UC Irvine posted a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's.
The Rebels scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute, on Hakim Zermouni's second score of the year. The play started when Nicholas Paterson brought the ball down the midfield on an attack, and passed off to Lamar Neagle on the left side. Neagle crossed the ball right in front of the goal, and Zermouni headed in a shot that UMBC goalkeeper Steve King couldn't keep from crossing over the goalline.
The game was tied in the 63rd minute following a foul by the Rebels. On the ensuring free kick, Bryan Moffa blasted the ball to the right post, past a diving Rebel goalkeeper Calvin Bailey for the score. Moffa then contributed to the game-winner in the 83rd minute, sending a long free kick into the box that was headed in by David Feazell for the second Retrievers score of the day.
Bailey finished with three saves in goal for UNLV, while King posted five saves. UNLV lost despite holding a 12-9 edge on shots.
In the day's other game, Matt Murphy scored on a free kick, and his free kick in the 49th minute was redirected into the goal by Rafael Macedo to give UC Irvine (5-1-1) a 2-1 win over St. Mary's (2-2-3).
UNLV returns to action next Sunday, Sept. 24, in a home game against Cal State Fullerton at 1 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
