The UNLV men's soccer team looks for its first win of the 2006 season on Saturday, when they travel to San Diego, Calif. for a non-conference tussle with the San Diego State Aztecs at 2 pm. The Aztecs and Rebels are very familiar with each other, having played a total of 32 times in men's soccer. The Aztecs hold a 17-10 edge over UNLV, while five games have ended in a draw. The last meeting between these two teams was in 2004, with SDSU taking the 2-0 decision.
For the Rebels, all eyes have to be on sophomore forward Nicholas Paterson. Paterson is currently atop the MPSF points standings, scoring twice and distributing two helpers for six points total. Senior Martin Kenny and junior Hakim Zermouni have each found the net once this season.
The Aztecs are led by their senior keeper Tally Hall. Hall, a 2005 first-team All-American, posted a school record of 12 shutouts a year ago, along with a 0.49 goals against average, second in NCAA. Sophomore Omar Persad leads the team in assists with two, which is good for second in the Pac-10.
SDSU is coming off a tough 1-0 loss to #14 Santa Barbara last weekend. Tally Hall had five saves in net, while Kraig Chiles led the Aztecs with two shots on goal. San Diego State was scheduled to take on UC-Riverside on Wednesday, but results were not available at release.
The Aztec offense has been spread around with eight different point getters on four total goals scored. SDSU also has a thrill for the dramatic, having all of its games decided by just one goal so far.
