The Lady Rebels continued their stellar play since the Christmas break, claiming their fourth win in the last five games with a 51-46 victory over Wyoming in a nationally televised matchup on Thursday night. The win put UNLV (8-7) into fourth place in the Mountain West at 2-1, and the Lady Rebels can make a move into the top three with a win Saturday against the visiting Utes of Utah (10-6, 3-0), in a game set for tip off in the Cox Pavilion at 3 pm
While Utah is playing without the services of four-time MWC Player of the Year Kim Smith for the first time since 2001-02, the team has been on a roll recently, having won nine of its last 11 games. The Lady Rebels however have won four straight in the Cox Pavilion, and look to continue that home win streak on Saturday. They also hope to snap a six-game losing streak to Utah, the longest active streak to any conference opponent for UNLV.
Two of the keys in the game should be rebounding and defense. UNLV and Utah are two of the top rebounding teams in the conference, as Utah leads the MWC with an +8.5 rebound margin, while UNLV `s 14.6 offensive rebounds per game is top in the league. The Lady Rebels also feature the top rebounder in the MWC in Faye Muller, who is also ranked 10th in the nation with 10.7 boards per game. UNLV is also near the top of the league in steals with 8.5 per game, thanks to Sequoia Holmes who averages a league-high 2.7 per game. Utah meanwhile is dead last with 6.3 steals per game, and has a negative -3.06 turnover margin, also last in the conference.
