One of the Mountain West Conference's most competitive rivalries will tipoff for the first time in the 2006-07 season on Saturday night, as the UNLV women's basketball team will take on New Mexico on "Pack The Pit" night in Albuquerque at 6 pm (PST). Six of the games of the last eight games in the series have been decided by five points or less, including all three games in the 2004-05 season by just three points each. The Lady Rebels have also won the last two games in the series, including a 57-45 win over the Lobos in the 2006 MWC Quarterfinals in Denver.
Saturday game is a key contest for both teams in the conference race, as the Lobos were picked as preseason favorites, but will bring a 2-4 record into the contest. A loss would leave them in seventh place, with road trips at co-conference leaders Utah and BYU still to come in the second half. UNLV meanwhile could extend a two-game lead over New Mexico in the standings with a win.
Though New Mexico is without a doubt the toughest road trip in the league thanks to its homecourt advantage with an average crowd of nine thousand, the Lady Rebels are used to that experience. They have appeared in four of the top 11 biggest crowds in the Pit's history, including two games that were complete sellouts at 18,018. UNLV was competitve in all those games as well, as two of the sellouts were decided by three and four points, while UNLV claimed a 62-53 win over on Jan. 6, 2002, in front of 17,215.
