LAS VEGAS - The 48th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team won 7-0 for the second straight day, this time over former Big West Conference-rival Pacific at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Saturday.
The Lady Rebels (2-0) dropped their first match of the season in doubles play but still took the team point by winning on the other two courts over the Tigers (1-1).
In singles, senior Claire Smith moved all alone into 10th place on the UNLV career victories list with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Helen Schneider at No. 4. Smith improved to 7-2 this season and 63-37 all-time. The native of Yarm, England, needs just one more victory to tie former teammate Cindy Treber in ninth place at the school.
All-American Elena Gantcheva won her third straight, 6-3, 6-1 over Vana Mrazovic at the top spot. Also winning in straight sets for the Lady Rebels were Linda Tempelfelde at No. 5 and Alisa Razina on court six. Two players -- Nikol Dimitrova at No. 2 and Kristina Nedeltcheva at No. 3 -- needed to use super-tiebreakers to get by their opponents.
UNLV will close out its opening weekend by taking on Weber State on Sunday beginning with doubles play at 10 a.m.
