SAN DIEGO - The UNLV women's tennis program has three singles players and a trio of doubles teams still alive after the first day of action at the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships, which started Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Leading the way for the Lady Rebels was ninth-seeded Elena Gantcheva who, after a first-round bye, downed Marta Simic of UC Santa Barbara 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Kristina Nedeltcheva, seeded 16th, also won after a bye, 6-1, 6-0 over Shelly Injejikian of Cal State Fullerton. The third Lady Rebel to advance to Friday's Round of 32 was Nikol Dimitrova, who won twice - 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 over Hannah Grady of Long Beach State and 6-4, 6-4 over Tamara Tanner of Loyola Marymount.
In doubles, Gantcheva and Nedeltcheva, who are ranked fifth nationally, and seeded second at the event enjoyed a first-round bye. UNLV's two other duos won their first-round matches. Katy Williams and Anna Maskaljun topped Natalia Toporowska and Jane Huh of Arizona 8-3 while Adrienn Hiduegi and Dimitrova got by Bliss Nixon and Jasmin Heckel of LMU 9-7.
No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
