Texas Tech Powers Past Lady Rebels 79-64

LAS VEGAS - Texas Tech used its physical advantage in the post to outrebound UNLV by 22, and rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to earn a 79-64 victory over the Lady Rebels in women's basketball action on Saturday night from the Cox Pavilion. UNLV dropped to 1-2 with its second straight loss, while the Lady Raiders remained perfect on the year at 4-0.

It was UNLV with the advantage for the first 25 minutes of the game, as Dominique Harris and Brittany Halberg combined for 12 points over the first five minutes to give UNLV a 15-6 edge. Texas Tech cut the edge to two, 17-15, but then saw the Lady Rebels score nine of the next 10 points for a 26-16 lead, off a jumper from Sequoia Holmes. UNLV would take a 32-25 lead into halftime, thanks to holding Texas Tech to just 36.4% from the floor, while also holding a 14-6 edge on points off turnovers and knocking down three of six from behind the arc.

The Lady Rebels still held a nine-point edge in the beginning of the second half, off a Holmes jumper that made the score 38-29 with 17:13 to play. Texas Tech's post combination of Erin Myrick and Stanecia Graham then scored six straight points, while a steal and layup and a three-point play completed an 11-0 spurt that gave the Lady Raiders just their second lead of the game, 40-38, with 14:34 left in the second half. Halberg was fouled on a three-point try, and made all three free throws to push UNLV back in front, 41-40. That was the last lead of the game for the Lady Rebels, with Texas Tech scoring 10 of the next 11 points to claim a 51-42 edge, completing a 22-4 run over a 5:12 span.

The lead would grow to 13 points, before UNLV made a final run, on back-to-back three-pointers and a Holmes free throw that cut the edge to 61-53. After grabbing the offensive rebound on Holmes' second free throw attempt, UNLV missed the putback, and an 8-2 run by the visitors gave them a 14-point lead with 3:52 left in the game. The Lady Raiders scored the final five points of the game to take the 79-64 victory.

Holmes led all scorers with 21 points, and became the 17th player in UNLV history to reach the 1,000 career point mark, as she now has 1,002 in her career as a Lady Rebel. Harris posted a career-high of 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Halberg added 16 points. The rest of the team combined for just eight points. UNLV shot 34.5% (20-of-58) for the game, 5-of-16 for 31.3% from three-point range, and 70.4% at the free throw line.

Jordan Murphree paced Texas Tech with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting, and added five assists. Graham came off the bench with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Myrick posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds and Dominic Seals had 11 points. The Lady Raiders shot 56.7% in the second half, and 48.1% (25-of-52) for the game. They held a 36-14 edge on points in the paint, 20-9 on second chance points, and 23-6 on points from the bench.

UNLV will close out its five-game homestand this weekend by hosting the Lady Rebel Shootout, on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 23-24 in the Thomas & Mack Center. The opening game on Friday features Montana and Oregon State at 1 pm, while UNLV takes on Richmond at 3:30 pm. The consolation and championship games will be at 1 pm and 3:30 pm as well on Saturday.
