LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's basketball team opened up with a 15-0 lead and never looked back on the way to a 94-48 victory over Dixie State in an exhibition contest from the Cox Pavilion on Sunday night.
The athletic Lady Rebels overwhelmed the DSU Rebels from start to finish, as they came up with seven steals in the first five minutes while scoring 15 unanswered points. For the game, UNLV forced 32 turnovers and finished with 21 steals, leading to 35 points off turnovers.
The other highlight in the win was the play of the Lady Rebel "4-H Club", as Brittany Halberg (18 points), Sequoia Holmes (14 points), Dominique Harris (11 points), and Shamela Hampton (10 points) all finished in double figures. Halberg, who scored 17 of her 18 points in the second half while missing just one shot from the floor, also led the team in rebounds (eight) and assists (five). UNLV had balance throughout the game however, as all 13 players that dressed scored, with 10 scoring four or more points.
Holmes, Hampton, and Harris scored 13 of the first 15 points, while Dixie did not score until the 13:25 mark. After the Rebels closed to within 11, 15-4, UNLV scored 11 of the next 13 points to open up a 20-point edge, 26-6, with 9:48 left to play in the half. The Lady Rebels would take a 42-15 edge into halftime.
Any chance of the game remaining close in the second half fell apart quickly, as following a three-pointer from DSU's Jessica Carver, Halberg scored on back-to-back layups to ignite a 17-0 spurt over a 3:26 span. Two straight baskets from Hampton capped the run for a 59-18 UNLV edge with 14:34 left on the clock, and Dixie State came no closer then 35 the rest of the way.
UNLV shot 52.2% (35-of-67) for the game, including 59.4% (19-of-32) in the second half. The Lady Rebels finished with 49 rebounds, 22 assists, and six blocks, and also hit 4-of-11 from downtown for 36.4 %.
Dixie State was paced by Carver with 19 points and six rebounds, while Denny Phommabout added 10 points and five rebounds. The Rebels were held to 24.6% (14-of-57) from the floor, and had just eight assists for the night.
UNLV will open the regular season at home on Friday, hosting Long Beach State at 5 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center, as part of a double-header with the UNLV men's team.
