LAS VEGAS - Senior forward Sequoia Holmes scored a game-high 28 points and UNLV held a 51-31 advantage on the boards as the Lady Rebels posted a 73-57 victory over Long Beach State on Friday afternoon from the Thomas & Mack Center in the season opener for both teams.
Four players finished in double figures for UNLV, paced by Holmes, who also added eight rebounds and four assists. Shamela Hampton posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dominique Harris recorded 12 points and Fanny Tirtiaux notched 10 off the bench.
The Lady Rebels opened the game on a strong run, leading by double digits very early in the half and extending the team to as high as 18 points, before taking a 39-27 edge into halftime.
In the second half, the 49ers were trailing 42-31 when they scored five straight points, the last two on a layup from Karina Figuero to make the score 42-36 with 15:49 on the clock. UNLV responded with a 9-0 run, keyed by seven points from Hampton, to push the lead back up to 15 points. LBSU would close within single digits just once more, 51-42 on a three-pointer from Courtney Jacob, but the Lady Rebels slowly increase the lead to as high as 18 points before finishing with the 16-point victory.
UNLV finished the contest shooting 37.9% (25-of-66), 75% at the line (18-of-24). Long Beach State was led by Figueroa with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Valeriya Musina posted 13. The 49ers shot 39.6% (21-of-53) for the game, but were forced into 21 turnovers and shot just 60% (12-of-20) from the line.
The Lady Rebels will return to action on Sunday, as they host Loyola Marymount at 3 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center.
