LAS VEGAS - The UNLV's women's swimming and diving team finished off the UNLV Winter Invite with a strong performance to win the overall team title, while the Rebel men moved up to finish in second place, as competition ended in the three-day meet on Monday night. This year's Invite featured a total of 19 teams and 500 swimmers.
Freshman Lisa Gillespie claimed the 200 back title for UNLV, as she finished in a time of 2:03.01. Junior Bailey Kuestermeyer was looking for her third win of the meet, but had to settle for second place as she touched the wall in 2:19.68 in the 200 breast for runner-up status.
Other highlights of the night for the Rebel women included Lara Sreibers finishing fourth in the 1650 free (17:26.94), Marina Sandback placing third in the 100 free (51.48), and the 400 free relay team of Sandback, Megan Hunt-Higgins, Bridget Crowley, and Marva Harpak took second place in 3:27.43.
For the men, they began with a first place swim by Kier Maitland in the 1650 free, in a time of 15:34.27. Two more Rebels earned runner-up honors, with Richard Hortness taking second in the 100 free (44.99), while David Seiler was second in the 200 fly (1:51.68). Jonas Andersson took third in the 200 breast (2:03.85), and Devin Phillips was seventh in the 200 back (1:51.28). The men's 400 free relay also took third, with Hortness, Kyle Virva, Phillips, and Calan Eldridge finishing in 3:03.03.
Both teams will now break for Christmas before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the UC Irvine Sprint Invitational.
