SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State went on a 16-4 run late in the second half to blow the game open and claim a 67-54 victory over UNLV on Thursday night in Mountain West Conference women's basketball action from the Cox Arena. The loss for the Lady Rebels leaves both teams tied for sixth in the league at 4-6, and San Diego State improved to 11-10 overall, while UNLV dropped to 10-12 for the season.

UNLV held a one-point lead at halftime, and were up 34-32 on a three-point play from Shamela Hampton with 18:25 to play. San Diego State then scored nine unanswered, capped by four straight free throws following a technical foul against Hampton.

Faye Muller knocked down a jumper with 12:21 left to make the score 41-39. The Aztecs then began their game-winning run, first scoring nine straight thanks to three straight baskets and a Kate Eveland three-pointer. Eveland then finished the rally by hitting back-to-back treys for a 57-43 lead with five minutes to play. UNLV came no closer then nine the rest of the way. The story was SDSU's defense, as the Lady Rebels were held to just 32.1% (9-of-28) from the floor for the half, and were forced into 11 turnovers as well. UNLV was also 0-of-6 from behind the arc in the second half, while the Aztecs made 4-of-6 from downtown.

The first half was a tight affair the entire way, though UNLV held the lead for the majority, and the largest lead was the Lady Rebels' 5-0 start to the contest.

Hampton led UNLV with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Muller posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sequoia Holmes, UNLV's leading scorer, was just 1-of-13 from the floor, finishing with six points, six rebounds, and four steals. As a team, the Lady Rebels shot 33.3% (18-of-54) and were 1-of-8 from long range for 12.5%. UNLV did hold a 43-30 edge on the boards.

San Diego State was paced by Quenese Davis' 15 points and seven assists. Eveland finished with 14 points, while Shanna Demus added 11. The Aztecs shot 40% (22-of-55) for the game, and 40% (6-of-15) from three-point range. They also caused 24 UNLV turnovers for the game, and came up with 12 steals.

The Lady Rebels will return to action on Saturday against the Wyoming Cowgirls in Laramie, Wyo., at 1 pm (PST).
