SAN DIEGO - The 60th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team lost only one set Friday en route to posting its school-record 10th shutout of the season, 7-0, over Utah at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.
The Lady Rebels improved to 16-5 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain West Conference while the Utes fell to 13-9 and 3-4.
UNLV began the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. The team's 16th-ranked duo, Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva, improved to 19-2 on the year with an 8-5 win at the top spot.
In singles play, Gantcheva downed Elizabeth Ferris 6-2, 6-3 to hand the Ute standout her first loss in 19 dual matches this season. In fact, Ferris (30-5) had not lost a match since September and came into the day 6-0 vs. MWC opponents. Gantcheva, ranked 57th, won her eighth straight match to improve to 16-4 in duals as a junior.
Nedeltcheva upped her freshman record to 20-6 overall with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Emily Kwok on court two. Nikol Dimitrova swept Andrea Maughan 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3. Also winning in straight sets was Claire Smith at No. 5 and Alisa Razina on court six. Senior Linda Tempelfelde improved to 16-4 in dual matches by rallying past Cheyenne Reveche in a super-tiebreaker at the fourth position, 0-6, 7-6, 1-0 (11-9).
With a chance to climb back into a first-place tie, the Lady Rebels will next face 27th-ranked BYU on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
