Rebels Sign Pair

LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's golf signed a pair of student-athletes to national letters of intent on Monday and they will join the Rebel golf team next fall, head coach Missy Ringler announced.

Alejandra Guacaneme and Therese Koelbaek are the pair that Ringler has inked during the early signing period and they will be able to compete for UNLV next fall during the 2007-08 season.

"I am very excited that Therese and Alejandra are going to be joining the Rebels next fall," Ringler said. "Not only are they very talented players that have strong backgrounds as members of their national teams to go along with quality golf games, but they have the attitude we are looking for to keep the program progressing."

Guacaneme is from Armenia, Colombia in South America is she is currently the No. 1 ranked junior player in Colombia and the third-ranked individual among amateur women in the country. She was a member of the 2005 Columbia national team that competed in the South American Championship, where Columbia won the team title and Guacaneme finished fourth. Guacaneme has won 11 junior tournaments in her junior golf career.

Koelbaek hails from Holte, Denmark and she brings a wealth of international experience to the Rebels. She is currently a member of Denmark's three-person national team and was a three-year member of the country's junior national squad from 2004-06. Koelbaek has played in three European Team Championships with Denmark, placing 12th in 2004, fourth in 2005 and 10th in 2006. She finished second in both the Finish Open Championship and Dutch Junior Masters in 2006 and Koelbaek also notched two third-place finishes (2004 and 2005) as well as a second-place showing (2006) in the Danish National Junior Championships. While she has a plethora of international experience, Koelbaek has also played competed in the United States, finishing 10th in the 2006 Doral-Publix Junior Classic and tied for 15th at the 2006 Junior Orange Bowl.
