Box Score
LAS VEGAS - UNLV scored twice in the final 17 minutes, including the second straight game-winning goal from senior forward Lamar Neagle with just over a minute to play to rally for a 2-1 victory over San Jose State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win evened the Rebels' conference record at 2-2 and they are now 7-4-1 overall on the season, while SJSU dropped to 4-4-3, 0-3 in league play.
San Jose State scored the lone goal of the opening half when Colby Moore collected a ball inside the box and sent a pass back to Efrain Burgos, Jr., who then sent a hard shot to the top right corner from 15 yards out for the score in the 30th minute.
UNLV would tie the score in the 74th minute. Richard Abrego drove down the right side, fed a pass to Daniel Cruz on the right side of the box, and Cruz then passed back to Ben Haugland who was in the center of the box 15 yards out from the goalline. Haugland blasted a shot to the top right corner of the goal that SJSU goalkeeper Lewis Sweeney couldn't get to in time, making the score 1-1.
The game was won in the 89th minute (88:58) off Neagle's conference-leading seventh goal of the year. With the Rebels pushing the attack deep into the Spartans' side of the field, Neagle dribbled into the left side of the box, juked out several SJSU defenders until he had an open look at the goal, and then unleashed a shot from eight yards out that squeezed in between the left post and the goalie for the score.
Hawk Mummey made five saves in goal for UNLV, while Lewis Sweeney posted three saves in the net for the Spartans. UNLV held a slight edge on shots (12-11), while SJSU had six corner kicks to three for the Rebels.
UNLV will return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, when it hosts New Mexico at 7:30 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
