LAS VEGAS - The No. 8 UNLV men's golf team shot 3-over-par 283 on Tuesday during the final round of play and finished in fifth place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which was played at Old Overton Club (par 70, 6,934 yards) in Birmingham, Ala.
Host and defending champion Alabama shot a final-round 1-over 281, but finished the tournament at 10-under 830 to win by six strokes. Auburn also shot a final-round 1-over and finished in second at 4-under 836. SMU was third at 2-under 838 after a final-round 11-over 291, Baylor was fourth at 1-under 839 after a final-round 3-under 277 and UNLV rounded out the top five at the 12-team event at 1-over 841.
SMU's Kelly Kraft shot a final-round 1-under 69 and won medalist honors at 6-under 204. UNLV junior Eddie Olson shot 69 during the final round and tied for second at 5-under for the tournament with Auburn's Glenn Northcutt, who held the lead entering the tournament's final day and shot 2-over 72 on Tuesday.
Rebel freshman Derek Ernst finished with a 3-under 67 to move into a tie for fourth place at 4-under.
UNLV junior Brett Kanda finished tied for 28th at 4-over 214 after a final-round 7-over 77, while senior Seung-Su Han shot even-par 70 to finish tied for 39th at 7-over 217 and freshman Colby Smith finished 58th at 20-over after a final-round 7-over 77.
UNLV will be back in action Nov. 10-12, at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Kahuku, Hawaii.
