SAN DIEGO - All three of UNLV's doubles teams and one senior singles entry are still alive after the first day of competition Thursday at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's West Regional Championships, which run through Monday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

After enjoying a first-round bye in singles, senior Nikol Dimitrova advanced to Friday's round of 32 by downing Tova Hausman of UC Santa Barbara 6-2, 6-2. UNLV's other singles victory came from Adrienn Hidvegi, who rallied past Stephanie Wetmore of UCLA 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round before falling later in the day.

In doubles, Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams are seeded 9-12 and had a first-round bye. Also, Alisa Razina teamed up with Anna Maskaljun for an 8-2 victory over a duo from Cal State Fullerton while Dimitrova and Hidvegi won their opener 8-4 over a team from host San Diego.

"It's never easy playing in one of the toughest regions in college tennis," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "We had tough matches today and some went our way and some did not. We had a great day in doubles, however, and it's good to see Nikol into the third round of singles. Now we'll regroup and get back out there tomorrow."

No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
