LAS VEGAS - Both of UNLV's remaining doubles teams won their way into Saturday's quarterfinals and then had match points later in the day before failing to advance at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's West Regional Championships, which run through Monday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Ninth-seeded Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams won their round of 16 match 8-4 over fifth-seeded Juliette Coupez and Samantha Mouley of San Diego. In the quarters, however, they saw fourth seeded Gabriela Niculescu and Maria Sanchez of USC rally for a 9-7 win.
Anna Maskaljun and Alisa Razina won their early match over Ali Walters and Andre Remynse of UCLA 8-6 before later squandering a lead and falling to Hannah Grady and Stephanie Jeans of Long Beach State 9-7.
Also, Williams remained alive in the consolation draw of singles after advancing by default and then downing Sofia Novak of UC Santa Barbara 6-4, 6-1.
No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
