ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico (8-5-2) scored two second-half goals to hold off the visiting UNLV (8-5-1) squad for a 3-2 victory in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Friday night. The win for UNM broke a tie between the two in the conference standings, pushing the Lobos to sole possession of second place at 4-2, while the Rebels dropped to third at 3-3.
The Lobos got on the scoreboard first in the 42nd minute when Justin Davis headed in a pass from Jack Smithson for a 1-0 lead. UNLV would tie the game in the 57th minute thanks to a penalty kick by Lamar Neagle.
New Mexico went back ahead in the 65th minute off a penalty kick by Simon Ejdemyr to make the score 2-1. The Lobos scored the eventual game-winner in the 77th minute thanks to a goal from Mike Porter. The goal was set up by a throw-in from Zach Tierney to Davis, who then passed the ball over to Porter for the score and a 3-1 UNM lead. Neagle struck again for the Rebels, this time in the 87th minute as his shot was deflected by a Lobo player into the goal to make the score 3-2.
UNM held a 17-11 edge for the game in shots, and 8-4 on corner kicks. Justin Fite made three saves in the net for the Lobos, while Hawk Mummey made five saves for UNLV.
The Rebels will return to action on Friday, Nov. 7, when it plays at San Jose State in a 7 pm contest.
