SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State's Nick Cukar scored a golden goal just under three minutes into overtime to lift the Spartans over UNLV 2-1 on Friday afternoon in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action. The loss dropped the Rebels to 8-6-1, 3-4 in league play, while SJSU improved to 7-5-4, 3-4-1 in the MPSF.
UNLV was the aggressor in the first half, owning a 12-5 advantage on shots, yet it was the Spartans who came up with the first score of the game. In the 37th minute, Cukar took a pass from Oscar Yniguez and shot cross cage to the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Spartan edge.
The Rebels tied the game in the 45th minute when freshman Allen Hardison scored his first career goal on a shot from the left side of the box to the right corner. Keegan Uderitz assisted on the score.
Both teams attempted eight shots in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. The Spartans would get off the first two shots of the first overtime period, and connected on the second one when Dan Addiego's throw-in found Cukar, who shot the ball into the near corner for the game-winner.
Hawk Mummey made four saves in goal for UNLV, while Lewis Sweeney posted five saves for the Spartans. UNLV held a 20-15 edge on shots, and 10-4 on corner kicks.
UNLV remains in California for its next game, as it faces Sacramento State on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1 pm.
