SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The UNLV women's basketball team used a 17-2 run midway through the second half to rally for a 63-55 victory in an exhibition contest at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon from Coussoulis Arena.
The Lady Rebels were down at halftime 38-33, and trailed 44-36 with 16:34 to play in the game. UNLV then came alive defensively, holding the Coyotes to just two points over the next 10+ minutes. Six straight points by Shamela Hampton tied the score at 44-44 with 13:14 to play and the Lady Rebels would never trail again. Following Hampton's basket, the two teams traded field goals, and then a Jamie Smith free throw started a run of seven straight points from a total of four different players. India Chaney's free throws capped the run, putting UNLV up 53-46 with 6:28 to go in the game. The lead grew to as high as 11 points, 61-50, on a pair of Erica Helms free throws at the 2:04 mark.
CSUSB came out on fire to begin the first half, knocing down 47 percent from the floor including 43 percent (6-of-14) from three-point range. The Coyotes went up by six points with 11 minutes left in the opening half, 22-16 on a jumper by Audrey Duran and by the 5:50 mark were up by 10 on a three-pointer by Krystal Urzua, 36-26.
The second half however was a different story for the Coyotes on offense, as UNLV held them to just 18.9% (7-of-37) from the floor, and 0-of-15 from three-point range.
Hampton led UNLV with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Helms was next with 14 points and six assists, while Harris added 10. UNLV shot 36.2% (21-of-58) from the floor, 5-of-16 (31.3%) from behind the arc, and made 16-of-20 at the e for 80%. UNLV held a 53-36 rebounding edge, and but turned the ball over 17 times while forcing just eight.
Krystal Urzua had a game-high 21 points and five rebounds for the Coyotes, while Morgan Pryor scored 11 points and Jaclyn Rainville had 10 points.
UNLV will open the regular season at home on Friday, hosting Sacramento State at 7 pm in the Cox Pavilion.
