Lady Rebels Fall Short In Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas - UNLV played Texas Tech even in the second half, but couldn't overcome a cold shooting performance in the opening 14 minutes in falling 75-63 on the Lady Raiders' home court on Tuesday night in women's collegiate basketball action from the United Spirit Arena. With the loss, UNLV dropped to 4-2 on the season, while Texas Tech improved to 5-3, and 5-0 on its home court.

Texas Tech opened the game up 9-2, as UNLV missed seven of its first eight shots of the game. The lead was extended to 22-11 on a free throw from Dominic Seals with 6:16 to play in the half. UNLV used an 8-0 run, which featured back-to-back treys from Shannon Oberg, to close within 22-19 with 4:22 left on the clock. Texas Tech answered back though with an 8-0 run of its own, with another Seals free throw making the score 30-19 with 2:21 to play, and the Lady Raiders would take a 37-25 lead into halftime. UNLV shot 30.3% (10-of-33) from the floor in the first half, while TT made 13-of-29 from the floor for 44.8%. The Lady Raiders also made 7-of-9 at the line, while UNLV did not attempt a free throw in the first half.

The lead was 48-34 in favor of Texas Tech when UNLV ran off an 11-2 spurt, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Allison Holiday just two seconds apart that made the score 50-45 with 11:58 to play. However, TT countered with an Ashlee Roberson trey to push the edge back to eight points, the beginning of eight unanswered points. The lead grew to as high as 14 again, and UNLV stayed within 11-14 points for the final five minutes, but could not close within single digits.

Shamela Hampton was held scoreless in the first half but scored 14 in the second to lead UNLV, and also added 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Three Lady Rebels all finished with nine points each, Jamie Smith, Erica Helms and Holiday. UNLV did a good job on the boards, holding a 43-34 advantage over a Texas Tech team that entered the night with a +5.0 rebound margin on the season. As a team, UNLV shot 38.3% (23-of-60) for the game, made 7-of-18 (38.9%) from three-point range, and 10-of-13 at the line (76.9%). The Lady Rebels turned the ball over 27 times, which was turned into 28 points.

Four players finished in double figures for TT, with Maria Moore scoring a career-high 18 points. Seals posted 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Roberson and Jordan Murphree both recorded 12 points. The Lady Raiders shot 43.5% (27-of-62) for the night, and were 6-of-18 from behind the arc (33.3%).

UNLV returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, with a 2 pm contest at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif.
